Scope of Work: Deck Resurfacing
Town: Madison, NJ
Timing: 2 days
This Madison NJ townhome featured a low deck off the back of the home. The deck was built with pressure-treated lumber and included a built-in corner bench flanked with planter boxes. The outdoor space also housed a boxed-in air conditioning unit, complete with latticed gate. The deck was showing signs of mildew and some rot. The homeowners were getting tired of the continual upkeep and elected to resurface their deck with composite. Composite material never needs to be stained or refinished. It is durable and water resistant. It will look great for years and years.
Deck Resurfacing in Madison NJ
A deck resurfacing, or refacing project involves removing all of the deck floorboards. The deck frame and joists remain intact. No permits are required for this type of deck project, as the structural elements are not altered.
For this deck resurfacing project, we also removed the corner bench and planter areas. The bench was showing signs of rot and the homeowners preferred to remove it so that space could be used for free-standing deck furniture.
In order to lay the new composite floorboards properly across the entire deck, we also need to temporarily remove the box and gate around the AC unit.
Once all of the pressure-treated components were removed, the carpenters inspected the existing frame. Some of the framing needed to be repaired. Once the frame was secure, the carpenters cut the new composite decking to fit. Each board was laid and spaced out evenly right up to the back sliding glass doors. When all of the floorboards were in place, we re-installed the air conditioning “cover”. This was painted to match the privacy fencing blocking this townhome from its neighbors. The privacy fence was also repainted so everything was fresh and clean.
In just two days this deck was transformed from mildewed and rotted to durable and maintenance free.
