Historic homes are treasures that need to be protected and treated like the important reminders of history that they are. Our team at Monk’s was called in to perform an exterior home renovation on this historic home dating back to 1725! The trim, windowsills, and portico of this home were rotting and in desperate need of replacements. The layers and layers of paint applied to this home over years of new paint jobs were flaking off and needed to be stripped off. In only eleven days our team was able to get this historic home’s exterior looking as good as new!
Historic Home Exterior Repairs
After years of exposure to the elements it is natural for wood to rot and deteriorate. The windowsills, door trim, and portico of this historic home were deteriorating rapidly and were in desperate need of some help from Monk’s.
Here you see the front portico corner is in dire need of replacement after being damaged during Hurricane Sandy. Our team at Monk’s will replace the portico corners and columns with azek.
The window sills were deteriorating and would need more than a fresh coat of paint to bring them back to life. These sills would also be replaced with composite. Composite is a popular choice in exterior projects because it is a moisture resistant material. Composite will not rot and deteriorate the way that wood will.
To replace the windowsills, trim, and portico corner, our team carefully custom built each piece modeled off of the home’s originals. Each piece was carefully measured and cut to fit the historic home.
Historic Home Exterior Painting
Due to the years and years of repainting the cedar clapboard shingles of this home had accumulated many layers of paint. The layers of paint were flaking off; leaving the only solution for a successful paint job to involve stripping all shingles down to the bare wood.
Once the entire house has been stripped down to bare wood it is carefully cleaned, sanded, and prepped for painting.
We treated all of the cedar clapboard with primer. Then we applied two coats of Benjamin Moore Aura paint.
Repainting this historic home’s exterior will not only improve the look of the home but will also help protect it from the elements.
Our team at Monk’s matched the color of the existing paint; yellow for the cedar clapboard siding, and white for all of trim and other exterior adornments.
In only eleven days our team was able to strip all of the existing paint off of this home, repaint it, and rebuild the windowsills, trim, and portico. This historic home was looking as good as new, thanks to Monk’s!
