How to Remove a Pet Stain from Hardwood Floors

Pet Stain Removal

Scope of work: Dustless Floor Refinishing, Pet Stain Removal

Location: Basking Ridge, NJ  07920

Timeline: 2 days

We love our furry, four-legged family members, but aging or unwell animals can wreak havoc on hardwood flooring. Accidents that aren’t caught and cleaned right away can damage wood. Moisture trapped underneath a carpet or rug can create a stain that isn’t noticeable until the carpet is removed.

In the case of these Basking Ridge homeowners, they have a number of cats and dogs that may have caused the large stain on their dining room floor. Does this rottweiler look guilty to you?

Removing a Pet Stain

The homeowners asked estimator, Kurt Becker, if the stain would be able to removed. In this case, as in most cases, the answer is “yes.” Having said that, we won’t know for sure until we begin the dustless sanding process. If the stain penetrated deep into the wood, another option is to stain the entire floor a darker color. This will help hide any stain that was unable to be sanded out. Additionally, an option is to replace the damaged section of the floor with new hardwood. Once the floor has been repaired, we sanded, stained and sealed the entire surface for a uniform appearance.

Sanding out the Pet Stain

Monk’s flooring specialists use a dustless floor sanding system.  This process requires using HEPA filters and a system of hoses to help eradicated the dust and dirt associated with floor refinishing.

The owners of this Basking Ridge home chose to refinish the floors in their dining room, stairway, and upstairs hallway. They also elected to keep the natural color of the oak flooring. Because of this, we did not apply any stain. When the sanding was complete, we applied the the waterborne poly. For this project we used Bona finish which is a waterborne poly, as opposed to using an oil based finish.

When using an oil based finish you must wait an entire day between applying coats. Our team at Monk’s usually applies three coats of poly for a hardwood floor refinishing job; meaning the space being refinished is out of commission for at least three days. Due to the fact that we were refinishing high traffic areas in this home, a waterborne finish was appealing because in only one day three coats could be applied.
