Window replacement is a considerable investment in your home. However, replacing leaky windows with upgraded, energy-efficient windows can immediately save you money on your energy bills. Of course new windows also add to your resale value. But how do you know when it’s time to invest in new windows?
A few tricks to determine if you need new windows:
- Place your hand around the edges of your window on a windy day. Can you feel air? Your windows are leaking.
- Place a candle or incense smoke near your window sash. If the smoke moves or gets sucked into the window, your windows are leaking.
- From outside, aim the light of a flashlight towards your window frame at night. If you see light coming through the frame, your windows are leaking. This is not the best way to test for small cracks or leaks.
- If your windows are foggy or have moisture between the panes of glass, the seal is broken. A broken seal means that the insulation is gone and the window should be replaced.

- Check the label NFRC label. The National Fenestration Rating Council is a nonprofit certification body for the energy performance of windows, doors, and skylights. If the U-Factor is higher than 0.30, your windows are leaky and costing you money. If you aren’t sure, typically windows from the 1990s to the early 2000s are somewhere between 0.45–0.55. The window label example below shows you the different ratings and what they mean.

Whole Home Energy Assessment
Most energy providers will offer a free, in-home energy assessment. A technician will come to your home and review your energy efficiency. In addition to air leakage, they will also assess your appliances, insulation, heating and cooling systems, water heaters and lighting. After inspecting your home from top to bottom, they will provide recommendations for energy-saving improvements. Sometimes they will even provide and install free or reduced-cost upgrades to help improve your energy efficiency. Local energy providers offering these assessments include JCP&L and PSE&G.
