An open or floating staircase is used to provide an unrestricted view between two rooms. While a standard staircase creates a complete division between rooms. Floating stairs are particularly useful in a small area to give a more open feel. They are also used frequently in modern architecture to add to the style of the home. However, floating stairs are not a great idea for small children who could fall between the treads or other openings in the structure.
In this traditional home, the staircase was partially open. At the top of the staircase there were two walls, but only a banister and spindles down one side of the staircase. After one of the homeowners slipped and fell, the couple decided to make arrangements to increase the safety of the stairs.

Adding Spindles and a Banister to Floating Stairs
In order to make these stairs safer, the homeowners asked us to install a new banister on the left side of the stairs. We also agreed to add spindles to close up the open area on the lower left side. These floating stairs still do not have risers, which can also cause safety issues, but the homeowners decided that addition wasn’t necessary.
Our carpenters first installed a wooden banister from the top of the stairs to the support beam that is located about three stairs from the bottom. Then the spindles were installed. Our painters came in to paint the spindles to match the spindles on the opposing side. The banister was left a natural wood color. The customer opted not to have the surrounding walls, spindles, and opposite banister painted, which we recommended.
In just two days these open stairs are much safer!
