Galley kitchens have gone out of fashion as many people desire open-plan living with kitchens blending into eating and living areas. However, there are some benefits to this long and narrow space. First off, kitchen noises are better contained. Noisy dishwashers, blenders and clanking pans won’t interfere with a televised game or movie. Also, galley kitchens are situated so everything is in close reach, making cooking and cleaning more convenient. Plus, you can fit more cabinetry in a smaller area in a galley kitchen. This means that you get more storage and counterspace.
However, a dated kitchen is a dated kitchen no matter the design. This kitchen has passed it’s peak and so we gave this galley kitchen a remodel, delivering a bright and gorgeous space.
Galley Kitchen Remodel Process
Once we went to the home to take measurements and discuss the project, the homeowners visited our Morristown showroom. Here, they met with a Designer to select cabinetry, tile, fixtures and hardware. She configured the cabinetry layout incorporating their wish to have an integrated microwave, pantry, and small appliance cabinet. We also configured and ordered a bench for the backdoor. Built from the same kitchen cabinetry, this bench matches the room perfectly. Once the homeowners approved the design, we ordered and delivered the materials.
The first step in the installation process is to remove all the existing countertops and cabinetry. Then, for this project, we refinished the hardwood floors. They were quite warn in the middle of the galley, as well as around the door to the basement. We sanded using our dustless sanding system, stained and sealed the floors. Once these were dry, we began to install the cabinetry. Once the lower cabinets were in place, the soapstone countertops were templated and then installed. Soapstone is a beautiful choice for countertops as it is heat and water resistant, and requires no maintenance. Some soapstone owners oil their counters to darken them, but it is not required.
In addition to the galley cabinetry, we also installed an island to add more storage and prep space, and to add a casual dining area.
In order to keep the remodeled kitchen looking great, the homeowners relocated their workstation and began utilizing their dining room for family meals. Now, this galley kitchen can be utilized for cooking and casual dining. We think this galley kitchen remodel looks great!
