This basement rental unit had a spacious L-shaped open kitchen, but it was dated. To increase the rental potential, the owners decided to give this kitchen a facelift by painting the oak cabinetry white and replacing the Formica countertops and backsplash with quartz and tile.
A kitchen makeover is a great way to upgrade a kitchen without the time and expense of a full remodel.

Basement Kitchen Makeover
For this makeover, we began by removing all the doors and drawer fronts so they could be cup-spray painted. All surfaces were hand-sanded, primed, and then given two coats of paint. We lightly sanded in between each coat. While the cabinetry was drying in between different coats, we removed the countertops and backsplash. The wall was patched and smoothed where needed.
The new countertop was templated and installed. It takes about a week between templating and installation for the fabricator to cut the stone. Once the countertop was in place, the subway backsplash tile was installed. We used a dark grey grout to add visual interest to the plain white tile.
Lastly, the new hardware was installed. The next renters will surely love their new kitchen.

Since the plumbing and electric aren’t changing in a kitchen makeover project, no permits or inspections are required. This shortens the duration of the project while also reducing costs. However, makeovers still make a great visual impact. Just take a look at this kitchen makeover in Denville project that we completed. What a difference!
