Scope of Work: Redwood Deck Refinishing
Monk’s Method
Redwood is one of the most desirable materials for decking. Redwood is naturally fire retardant, pest and decay resistant. It resists warping and shrinking. In addition to being so naturally durable, it’s a beautiful material that requires lower maintenance than standard pressure-treated lumber. While redwood is abundant in the western part of the country, here in New Jersey, the material is typically unavailable. Therefore, most decks in the area are pressure-treated lumber or composite.
The redwood deck was due for some needed maintenance. Some of the handrails were rotted, and the deck was mildewed, faded and peeling.
The first step was securing the necessary redwood from the west coast. After having the material shipped to Madison, NJ, we were able to begin. The carpenters removed the rotted portions and cut and installed the replacement pieces.
Then the painters came and began by pressure washing the structure. This helped remove the dirt, mildew and loose paint. Then the painters hand-sanded the deck to remove the remaining paint.
Finally, we applied a single coat of solid stain making the deck a striking bright red.
Now this redwood deck is ready to serve the homeowners for many more years.
