Basement Stair Replacement in Chatham NJ

Final Painted Staircase

The stairs leading to an unfinished basement don’t need to be anything fancy. No guests will be heading down, and the only time you use them is to store or retrieve seasonal items. However, all staircases need to be is safe and sturdy.  Unfortunately, these interior basement stairs were bowed and rickety.

We replaced the entire staircase and created a better structural support for the new stairs. We finished the project by painting the wooden stairs.

First, the carpenters brought a ladder downstairs to the basement. Then, they removed the existing staircase. The carpenters built the new frame. This included inner, outer and center strings to provide adequate support for this staircase. The previous stairs did not have a center string which was why the stair treads were sagging in the middle.

The treads and risers were installed by the carpenters. Because these stairs were purely utilitarian, no decorative banisters or balusters were installed. Just the basics for this project.

Once the carpentry work was done, the painting crew came to prime and paint the new structure. The paint also serves two practical purposes. First, it will help protect the wooden stairs. Second, it will allow for easy cleanup, whether it be sweeping or mopping.

In just three days this basement stair replacement project was complete.
