Converting a Tub to Shower for Better Accessibility

Converting a Tub to Shower

Scope of Work: Bathroom Remodel
Town: Madison, NJ
Timing: 3 weeks

So many older homes have bathrooms with shower over tub configurations in the bathroom. However, many people never actually take a bath, preferring the convenience of taking a shower. Additionally, swinging legs over the side of the tub becomes increasingly difficult as we age. Many homeowners decide converting a tub to shower is good option. For this homeowner, converting the tub to a shower in her master bathroom made perfect sense to improve accessibility.

We began removing all the existing materials in this master bathroom. The homeowner was very happy to see the mirrored shower wall and mirrored closet doors taken out.

After the room was prepared, we began laying the tile. The shower floor tile is a pretty circle mosaic. For the bathroom floor, we installed large, porcelain subway tiles in dark grey. We put in standard white subway tiles for the shower walls. However, a mixed grey thin subway mosaic was used as a decorative accent. The shower accent tile ties the room together.

Then we hooked up the double vanity. The white cabinetry with black quartz top matches the rest of the room perfectly. We also put up two separate mirrors above the sinks. The only mirrors now in the room, much to the delight of the homeowner.

We replaced the mirrored by-pass closet doors with standard wood bi-fold doors.

The homeowner opted for a free-standing teak corner bench, but we have also created benches in many showers for added safety. She did, however, elect for both a standard, as well as handheld shower heads. Additionally, we can also install grab bars in showers and in other areas to aid mobility and balance.

Converting a tub to shower is complete once the shower doors are installed. Now the homeowner can safely use her master bathroom.
